Day 5: The Great Ocean Road

After feeling the heat our first day in Melbourne (literally), we decided to hit the road and explore the scenic Great Ocean Road. It took up pretty much our entire day, so I was going to let the pictures tell most of the experience but now... boo to the guy who stole my phone.

We drove about 3-4 hours south of Melbourne, dodging the bush fires that closed off parts of the road, curving through the hills and rain forest, and popping out on the coast to see our first stop: The Twelve Apostles. This was pretty cool, it's a lovely place where the ocean and time has carved out these stones that are a little separated from the rest of the coast line, Since we did the self-guided tour, I'm not sure what the story is behind the naming of it, so we'll just have to use our imagination. So here's the story: the 12 stone apostles saved stone Jesus who was about to be ruined by the weather phenomenon called Pontius Pilate. They were unsuccessful which is why we only see the 12 Apostles today. However, through his death, stone Jesus was able to save the 12 Apostles which is why they are still standing today. The real story is nowhere near as good as the one I just made up.

Next we went to see the Loch and Gorge along the road--very pretty and picturesque although I have no photos of it. Matt enjoyed that one of the rock formations was called The Razorback. Go Hogs?

After that, it was more driving and following the stunning coastline and rainforests until we made it to Appollo  Bay where we ate kebabs and enjoyed the views before getting back on our way. We had burgers to eat after all! Probably the best burger I've had in a long time. It was a burger that had pulled pork (we all know I'm a sucker for barbecue), barbecue sauce, swiss cheese, and the fixings. Oh so good. We all enjoyed our various burgers immensely, with the exception of Daniel who got the hot hot heat burger and was a little overwhelmed by the spiciness.

Oh, I should also note we learned a lot about how impatient we all are. With so many tourists like ourselves driving around this thing, I'm sure you can imagine there were some slow freaking drivers. And even though I experienced for only the second time ever how bizarre it is to drive on the wrong side of the road, I was not one of them. We started to recognize that not all car brands are created equal--take Nissans for instance, these seemed to have the slowest of the slow drivers. And this one Toyota Delica (I'm still not even sure what type of car this is other than its slow).

For example, we were on one winding road behind a Nissan, and they were quite the bashful bobs (for all our Mothers who may be reading this, we were using the appropriate amount of caution ourselves!). We were behind  them for about 10 km where there wasn't an opportunity to pass on the winding road, but there were small side lanes available at intervals where slow cars could let the faster ones pass. This Nissan, they were a bit dense so they NEVER did the right thing and pause in the slow lane so we could pass them. We tried hand signals, we flashed our lights, but nada. No such luck. It got so frustrating that Brooke suggested we turn them in for littering so they'd get pulled over. This is just one of many silly people we encountered on the road.

Again the few pictures I have from our day :( are below.

We saw the Twelve Apostles! This is what the rock formations behind us are called.

Everyone was pretty scared when I first started driving, it was  the wrong side of the road afterall and we were in the middle of the city with no idea yet how to get out of said city. But I like to think things settled down and I stopped hugging the left curb :)

Day 4: Satan's Fury in Melbourne

As I alluded to in the post about Day 3... we got a bit burnt during our walk from Bondi to Coogee and our time on Coogee Beach. This made for a relatively painful first day in Melbourne. Especially as the high was 104... hence why we nicknamed it Satan's Fury because that's how it felt on our skin.

We woke up pretty early and decided to check out the city, so we walked towards the river and some of the places we thought could be potential New Year's Eve destinations. Because of Satan's Fury and our sunburn, most of our walk was spent trying to find the shadiest path to our destination.

We walked all the way to the opposite side of the Yarra River to South Wharf which was a really cool district with some awesome shops and restaurants. Melbourne has done a really good job of building out the riverfront, and it looked amazing!

Aftet getting breakfast at a cool cafe we decided to walk towards the sporting side of Melbourne. We braved the sweltering heat and made it all the way to Rod Laver Arena only to find out there won't be any tours until after the Australian Open is over, which was quite disappointing seeing as the tournament doesn't even start for a another couple weeks. So we went to Melbourne Cricket Ground and got a tour there.

Cricket is a huge sport in Australia but we don't really know much about it. And even after having a good guide to show us around, we still don't know much about it. Here's what I do know: you have a bowler who throws the ball towards the batter who is guarding the wicket. The bowler wants to hit the wicket, the batter wants to protect it by knocking the ball as far as possible so he can get runs. 100 runs for a batter is a century, and  you get 6 runs for a "home run" aka a ball that gets hit outside the grounds. We also learned that there are different types of matches, some take around 3 hours, others like the test matches can take up to 5 days. All I know is no way I'd be able to watch that for 5 days.

After that we we took a turn in the National Sports Museum which had memorabilia and stories from Aussie sports history. It was pretty awesome, espeically the interactive parts where you could "play" some of the sports. We did Archery, tried punting a rugby ball, played some net ball, and tested our reflexes.

Once we tired of that, we decided it was time to get some lunch and then a nap, so we walked back towards our hotel. We found a place called Vapiano's which was a delicious build you own kind of italian place. Delicioso!

And then we braved the heat to make it back to our hotel where we fell asleep for about 2 hours before we got ready for New Years. We decided to save our money and not buy a package at a club and celebrated with some champagne in our room before venturing to an area called the Docklands to watch the fireworks. There was a big crowd there already but we were able to find some good spots to watch the show.

After the fireworks and testing out one of the clubs, we decided we should get something to eat since we hadn't had anything since lunch so we went hunting for a kebab place. Our hotel concierge told us where one was that might be open but apparently he was lying because we never found it. We did find a pizza place, however, so pizza it was. I had a supreme pizza and it was actually pretty good, but that could also have been my ravenous hunger making anything seem delicious.

And so ended our first full day in Melbourne.

Note: Unfortunately, due to my phone being stolen, I am missing some photos so the below are the only ones I have for today, and are some of the ones we have from our NYE shenanigans. If I'm able to recover more photos at any point, I'll add them in later!

Group photos for New Years! Just what the doctor ordered.

Who run the world? Girls. And then me attempting to make Matt smile. Mission failed.

Mirror selfies in the boys' room. And in the hallway before we go watch the fireworks.

Happy New Year!!!

We stand out thanks to my sequins.

The boys wish they were as much fun as we are.

Great success for New Years! Here's to 2016!
