We then met up with Carissa's friend Jenn at the apartment, got cleaned up (the ferry was a long one...) and then headed out to explore! I wanted to do the Picasso museum since it's free the first sunday of the month (and what do you know, yesterday was the first Sunday of the month!) but the line was absurdly long so we decided to first walk around the city and visit the Maritime museum.
Okay so maybe we had a bit of fun at the maritime museum. And a replica of one of the grand ships that ruled the seas!
And then some of his lesser known compatriots
We can't pass by a cannon without doing this. Sorry not sorry.
Eric has a huge forehead. And the men in the photo are not amused.
Walking around the city was fun but the maritime museum, which was starred in the guide book, was kind of a let down. As was the museum about the city's history. But we went, we took pictures, and we had fun regardless! And it was all freeeeeee! The city museum had Roman ruins and we all know how I feel about those, so that was cool, but it was underneath everything so it was hard to digest the scale of the place.
You might can tell we like to recreate the poses of the statues. Beautiful stained glass and a mural.
Roman Ruins!!! Those vats are for making wine, yum
Loved the arches and the symmetry
Pillars on pillars
Once that was done, we had to get gelato and found this fabulous place close to our apartment! Great success! We then walked along some streets to the main market, which alas was closed. And then a street with a lot of fun shops that were, you guessed it, closed. So that was a downer but we made plans to come back (Zara and Mango so you know I'm in!).
I found Aslan!
Christopher Columbus points the way, cool art in Barceloneta, and Eric letting us know what we knew all along
After walking the street, we settled on a place to eat where the waiters reminded me of Moe's they were so loud. It was all HOLA! HOLA! to everyone who came in. Kind of charming but also, you know, loud. We had a good meal though, considered ourselves fortified and then went on our lovely, charming way.
We wound our way back to the Picasso museum and waited in line for probably an hour at least. So worth it though! It was very interesting to see the development of Picasso and see him do "normal" paintings before he delved into the more abstract. I really enjoyed it! Although, some of his paintings were questionable as far as subject matter... but I won't get into that. (Carissa snapped a pic of the post card version of these, though, so if you ask I'm sure she'll show you)
After Picasso we headed back to the apartment because we were all pretty tired--Jenn from jet lag and the rest of us from our long ferry ride. Conserving our energy is a must so we can explore Barcelona with gusto!
Hasta maƱana! Or as they say in Catalan... (insert here--because I surely don't know).
