Day 1: Copenhagen, Canals, and Carlsberg

Day 1 back in Europe went off without a hitch and much fun was had. The day even started off well with pan au chocolate on my connection from Paris to Copenhagen, which begs the question of why we don't have nicer and more delicious snacks on our US flights (get with the program airlines!).

I met West in the city center near our AirBnB to store luggage until we could check-in and then we were off! We decided to walk to the Christansborg Castle and take a self-guided tour.

My lovely French airplane breakfast. of note, they also offered seconds! Our US airlines need to step up their game. Then the tower of Copenhagen and the steeple of the church.

Me and West in front of the palace, and then the city square nearby. I pretended to be a guard but they kicked me out since I'm not quite fierce enough.

A lovely entrance to the palace! And the guard towers had hearts cut into the side so I couldn't resist. We also had to wear shoe covers in the palace so as to not dirty things up with our common selves.

The palace was beautiful! Lots of lovely chandeliers and furniture.

All the halls seemed to have some sort of theme but I only remember a few, so I shall call this one on the left the floral room. And then we had the library which reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. They even had two (TWO) elevators to take you up to the second level. Such opulence.

More books and then a look out the window towards the other side of the castle. And then we have a long ballroom.

West and I decided to do our first imitation of the art. I think we did it perfectly. And then the great dining room. We expect to be invited to dinner soon.

We have the green room here (real name I think) and then the tapestry room. As you can tell, these tapestries are more recent (finished in 2000) and were pretty freaking cool with the vibrancy and colors. I believe each showed some important moments in time or were selected to reflect the people of the city. But I could also just be making that up.

Like I said, I liked the tapestry room. And then we had what they called the Velvet Room but West and I decided it should be called the Roll Tide Room because it was done in such a lovely crimson! We will be petitioning the crown to request a name change soon.

Another view of the Roll Tide Room, and then a portrait of the Royal family. There's quite a lot of them but alas none that are single.

The throne room! Where West and I were knighted. And then a lovely old piano that looked pretty cool.

West wanted me to get a little handsy with the statue. Which resulted in them trying to take my crown later. And West in his new knight's helmet

We then went to the ruins to see what was up down there. In truth, the highlight was probably this picture on the left known as Absalon's secret. It was a secret toilet. Why was it a secret? I have no idea, but it was very very secret. Then West and I decided to try our hands at raising the roof. Someone has to support the castle, no?

More of the ruins. This is probably the wall or something. Or the great limestone piece. Riveting I tell you.

We then headed to the stables to check out the stallions. Some didn't exactly look like they could carry people (see the left), while the white ones were beautiful (center). We also giggled a bit that they had cavemen on the side of the carriages.

Another view of the fake horses/carriage. A real carriage, in gold! They fancy.

After the castle, we headed back to the AirBnB to check in and meet up with Daniel. Our hosts gave us a bottle of Rose so of course we had to try some! Once Daniel met us, we then decided to head out to Carlsberg Brewery. It was a pretty fun and successful trip as the brewery was free to walk through (We love free things) and then they had some sausages (we were hangry) and beer in the beergarden where we hung out for a few hours before meeting up with the next arrival.

AirBnB had creepy decorations... We also walked through a cool food stall market right by our place, and then took the scenic route to find a cab to Carlsberg.

I didn't know Carlsberg had the biggest collection of beer bottles, but the more you know! And then we had some brewing devices.

We greatly enjoyed ourselves in the Beergarden because it was so nice outside!

We also made friends with some very nice Danes. Our new pals (center photo) are Hans (which is not as easy to pronounce as you would think), Allan, and Magnus. Magnus thought it would be fun to hang the beer pitcher on Daniel.

Magnus also thought it would be nice to buy Daniel a beanie. So Daniel now has a nice Carlsberg beanie! They were fun guys and even hung out with us later after we had dinner. Our dinner was a delicious pizza which is why West and I are holding the pizza cutters--definitely not because we were trying to do surgery.

All in all, our first day in Copenhagen was a blast! All 8 of us got in safely and slept quite soundly.
