Day 7: Uppsala Calling

For our last day in Sweden, we made as migration to the sleepy college town of Uppsala, a 30 minute train ride from downtown Stockholm. It's a beautiful little place, situated right on a little river (or canal maybe) and full of educated history.

West didn't bring out his neck supporter pillow so Sarah and I decided to memorialize the train ride. Once off the train, we headed into the town while walking along the river. The train station was itself a beautiful building.

Beautiful river canals and flowers abound! Even with creepy scarecrows.

We made it to the cathedral which is one of the main sights of the town.

A famous cathedral, Uppsala Cathedral is the tallest and largest in Scandinavia and full of former Swedish monarchs.

It was quite impressive inside for something built in the 13th century.

There were lots of little alcoves, including this one filled with books--not something I feel like you would normally see.

Some nice paintings, and figurines.

Some more of the cathedral and then of course we had to get a picture of the Bama store. Even in Sweden, they Roll Tide!

Next stop was Linnaeus's garden. You may know him as the father of botany, but we didn't know him at all. That American education I guess. But his home gardens were indeed lovely!

Some pretty red flowers and nice hedges that hopefully no girls from Auburn have gotten stuck in.

He even had some statues installed, because while he may know plants, he knows sculptures add a little something extra. And don't need watering.

All in all, I learned there were tons of plants for which I cannot pronounce the latin name.

Here's the man himself in statue form outside his old house, and then we have some of his personal drawings.

We had some time to kill before our train back so we sampled some of the local fare and enjoyed the lovely weather.

One last look at the cathedral! And then a glimpse of another big building on the Uppsala University campus.

All in all, a successful few days in Stockholm and Sweden! I would absolutely go back. But probably not in winter which one of our guides told us is very bitterly cold and very dark. No thanks to that.
